What is Yoga?

It is said to be a 4,500 year old practice.  Literally, yoga means to yoke, join or unite.  It is the merging of the body, mind and spirit - the divine or true self.  It is an explorative, scientific process through which we allow ourselves to turn our attention inward and it is a spiritual practice in that it allows practitioners to work individually, rather than a religious or group experience.

Yoga is the control of thought-waves in the mind Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

Why do Yoga?

Like so many things in life, people develop a yoga practice because they want to be happier.  For you this could be developing  more strength and flexibility, learning to be still, calming the mind, connecting with breath, or recovering from an injury whether chronic or acute, physical or emotional.  The true question is what are you looking for?

Before taking a class…

  • Wear comfortable clothes that will allow for free range of motion
  • Please arrive several minutes early so you can sign in, prepare and maybe even stretch
  • Refrain from eating for at least an hour before practice
  • Remember our studio is heated so drink plenty of water before and after class

Why practice at EDHTKD?

We are committed to building a community where students can grow and feel safe to explore themselves.  Our studio is a sacred environment where there is no room for ego, competition, judgment or criticism.  In this, we provide the safety that allows students to challenge themselves and have fun in their practice.

About our Instructors

James Kapicka

James started his yoga practice with a couple videos, which eventually led to taking a course at a city college.  As he saw the intelligence in the practice, he wanted more and eventually found his first studio. Yoga has offered him a practice in which he has become stronger, more flexible and open, more grounded, calm, and self-aware;  physically, mentally, and emotionally.  This practice has helped support a lot of positive changes in his lifestyle, diet, energy level, and relationships, eventually leading him to a desire to give back through teaching.

James has pursued training in many styles of yoga including: wall yoga, vinyasa, forest, and yin.  He now leads the yoga program here at Kevala and aspires to offer a program that is accessible, creative, fun, and personal.  He creates a space that is safe and sacred for growth and exploration, while keeping the practice dynamic and challenging.

Stacy Whittingham

Stacy is a certified Yoga Alliance Instructor and received her training through Rusty Wells at Urban Flow Yoga in San Francisco. Her love for yoga continues to grow as she observes the transformational effects a regular yoga practice has had on her students and within her own life. “Strengthening the body is wonderful, but strengthening the body, mind, and spirit brings healing and wholeness. In that place we can do anything.”

Karl Weiss

Yoga found Karl late into his 50’s and has sent him on an incredible journey that seems to have re-set the clock a few years.     After walking into a Yoga class  at Zuda Yoga Sacramento a few years ago and knowing he had found exactly what he needed in his life for the physical and spiritual growth he sought,  Karl decided to change careers and focus on practicing and teaching Yoga.  With Yoga as the way to that place of stillness in the midst of the speed and chaos that life is today. His classes bring the joy of discovery and the opportunity through breath, movement, sweat, and music (sometimes soft,  sometimes loud, sometimes funky) to find your edge and the opportunity to grow in a safe,  joyful environment. Before immersing herself in yoga, Iwona’s close circle of loved ones consisted of family members.  Now the circle has a never ending circumference of all people who I love unconditionally.  She was born and grew up in Poland at the time of the strict communist regime.  After moving to England to live, she was introduced to yoga.  Her interest in yoga practice and yoga ethics have grown immensely since she took on daily practices and Yoga Instruction Training in California.

Melissa Camper

Melissa is a certified Yoga Alliance Instructor and received her training through Zuda Yoga in Sacramento. Melissa has a strong background in dance, as well as energy work; both of which her teaching reflect. Yoga creates a universal language between all walks of life. Whether you are new to yoga or have been practicing for many years, there is always something one can take away from Melissa’s classes. We are all one, we are all connected. Everything is energy.
